The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG®) is a research program that made the first effort to produce a large digital corpus of literary texts. The project collected and digitized most of the texts written in Greek from Homer to the fall of Byzantium. Its goal is to create a complete digital library of Greek literature from antiquity to the present. TLG research activities combine the traditional methods of philological and literary studies with the most advanced features of information technology.

Loeb Classical Library is a useful tool to find the texts of the Greek and Latin classics in the original language along with an accurate English translation. The Library includes authors of all kinds and spans fourteen centuries of literary history. The database is edited by Harvard University Press.

Vetus Latina Database online is a very useful resource for the compilation of studies on the Bible: it contains all the citations from the fathers, listed by book, chapter and verse of the Bible, and the repository of H.J. Frede. The application allows you to search for single quotes or multiple quotes together.

The Syriac translation of the Old Testament based on the Hebrew text during the second century CE is now available online. This version is an important source for our knowledge of the text of the Old Testament. Its language is also of great interest to linguists.

The Online Egyptological Bibliography (OEB) lists the studies of Egyptology published from 1822 to today. It includes over 90,000 titles, each of which has a short abstract indicating the contents of the item. The bibliography may be searched by author, title of a periodical or of particular collections of studies.

The National Collective Archive of Periodicals (ACNP) is the Italian catalog of periodicals managed by the University of Bologna and the Central Library "G. Marconi” of the National Research Council of Rome. The catalog contains bibliographic descriptions of the periodical publications owned by libraries located throughout the country and covers all subject areas. The catalog is updated directly by the participating libraries through an online procedure.

What is the Z39.50

Z39.50 is an international standard (ISO 23950) which defines the protocol for retrieving information on multiple catalogs (even with different software), using the same method.

In essence, this protocol makes it possible for a remote user to search and retrieve the information available on another computer system, without knowing the search syntax used by that remote system.

The computer system used in this library of the Pontifical Biblical Institute is a Z39.50 server available for those interested in this type of access.
